Education and Treatment for Drug /
Alcohol Abusers or Addicts
NTP
Consultants takes an approach in counseling that is easy to
understand. Our counseling promotes sobriety and growth and
helps you to:
Express your feelings in a safe, supportive and nonjudgmental
atmosphere. |
Identify and sort out the roots of your substance abuse problems.
Identify
longstanding patterns of drinking/drug use that keep you from
solving your problems - then developing new ways to look at them.
Improve
your coping skills. |
Determine personality/attitudinal changes you can make leading to
more mature levels of functioning. |
Identify and achieve your goals. |
Our agency promises the
following: We will help you feel “understood”, you will be
educated on the various aspects of substance abuse (how it
affects your mind, body and spirit), and we will always abide
by strict codes of ethical conduct.
We take a complimentary role with
the Twelve Step Programs, as our agency believes the
philosophies behind this program will benefit the majority of
clients. We also take a complimentary role with the mental
health practitioners in our community. NTP Consultants can
provide effective treatment techniques for those that are
dually diagnosed, yet we shall not fail to make an appropriate
referral when the client’s problem is beyond our area of
training, expertise or competence.
In accordance with the
disease concept of addiction, we do not approach clients as
people to “cure”. It is our position that with the proper
interpersonal counselor-client relationship, we may enhance
motivation and help a client learn his or her desired
behavior. Our ultimate goal is to discharge you from the
program when you are stable, productive, willing to be
accountable for your own actions, capable of using the
resources gathered through treatment, and can function clean
and sober in a healthy recovery environment.

What to expect from NTP
Consultants:
There will be a clear plan of action provided to you upon your
first interaction with our agency. Clients are always encouraged
to take part in creating this plan of action; however the focus
will likely include: |
assessing the severity of your
problem |
helping you see that the substance you
are abusing is a problem that cannot continue |
education regarding the genetic & physiological processes of
alcoholism/addiction |
exploring interactions between
you and your family & friends; determining who is “healthy” for you
and who is not |
assistance with working toward
complete abstinence |
Types of Treatment:
In conjunction with the
“recovery model” as described above, NTP Consultants utilizes
rational-emotive therapy. This model of
treatment challenges client’s irrational belief systems and
dysfunctional self-statements…
“According to the ABC Model of RET, negative life events we
often confront are called Activating Events, or A’s, and the
emotions and behaviors that subsequently accompany these
events are called the Consequences, or C’s. People will
claim that negative Activating Events in their lives (or in
their pasts) actually cause their current distress. In
contrast, RET holds that it is their thoughts and beliefs, or
B’s about Activating Events that primarily and more directly
cause their disturbances.”
--Dianne Doyle Pita, Addictions Counseling The
Crossroad Publishing Company 1998
Our goal will be to
change unhealthy “belief systems” so that you may change your
feelings and behavior in order to live a happy and productive
life.
When possible,
family therapy will be
highly encouraged as part of the treatment process. Sessions
will focus on the importance of support, resolving conflicts,
establishing appropriate interactions among family members,
and education regarding support resources for significant
others. NTP Consultants embraces a family systems view;
acknowledging the mutual interaction of all family members and
the evolving nature of both the disease of addiction and
recovery over time within the family. When working with
families, the goal of treatment becomes one of moving the
family toward the use of consistent but flexible rules and
caring, but clear interactions with appropriate boundaries.
Family/marital counseling
can help with problems such as:
Teenagers that are beginning to experiment with drugs/alcohol |
Teenagers that are being raised by parents who are abusing
drugs/alcohol |
Rebellious teenagers |
How YOU can cope with alcoholism or substance abuse by a family
member or close friend who does not want to quit using
Marriage and family conflicts resulting from drinking/drugging |
Educating those around you about your disease once YOU understand
it. |
Communication skills |
Infidelity or abuse which occurred during
alcoholic/drug-related “binges”. |
We do this by:
Looking at your relationships within systems of friends, family,
school\work; and understanding how your problems developed |
Focusing on the power of relationships within systems as the
instrument of change and healing |
Remaining solution-focused during treatment – not spending time
reminding you of all you have done wrong; but rather what you can do
right when sober |
Pinpointing problems and completing family/therapy sessions as soon
as specific, concrete and measurable goals are met |
Group therapy is offered
when appropriate. We believe group therapy is an ideal setting
for working on social relationships. Group therapy assists
with denial and self-analysis through interactions with other
alcoholics and addicts. Self-esteem improves when our
counselors use group dynamics to provide a substance abuser
with a sense of strength, support and safety as the members
work together to change and to accept themselves.
“Relapse
Prevention Sessions” are offered; with education
regarding the process of recovery and support (for both client
and family) through the phases of recovery. Aftercare
counseling involves reviewing relapse prevention techniques,
and monitoring of compliance to an individualized “recovery
plan” created within the course of treatment. 12-Step
meeting attendance is monitored as well as providing
opportunity to process information obtained during 12-Step
meetings. Aftercare counseling is set up with intervals
between appointments being longer each time until both
counselor and client feel discharge from treatment is
warranted.
